Acclimation of your livestock is one of the most important factors in the health of your new critters. It requires care and time doing it correctly. It is common for people to use an incorrect method of floating a bag, exchanging a cup or two or water and then tossing the critters into the tank. Perhaps higher life forms such as fish can deal with this stress but snails, starfish, clams and other inverts may suffer and/or die from this method depending on differences in temperature and salinity.

The correct way of acclimation is using the drip method. This is a slow and safe way of acclimation for sensitive critters. It requires a slow dripping of tank water into the bag over an hour or more while removing water from the bag at several intervals. Follow this link for detailed description.
