SPS Corals

Acropora
Acropora is one of the most popular and iconic genera of SPS corals, known for their branching, table, and staghorn growth forms. They are among the most colorful corals in the reef hobby, coming in virtually every color of the rainbow. Acropora corals require excellent water quality, strong lighting, and high water flow. They are considered advanced corals but rewards keepers with rapid growth and stunning displays.

Hydnophora
Hydnophora is a genus of SPS coral with a distinctive growth pattern featuring interlocking skeletal structures. They are known for their ability to form large colonies with a unique texture. These corals are considered moderate in care requirements and prefer strong lighting and moderate to strong water flow.

Montipora
Montipora is a diverse genus of SPS corals found in many growth forms including encrusting, plate, and branching. They are generally considered more forgiving than Acropora and are excellent corals for intermediate reefkeepers. Montipora corals come in a wide variety of colors and patterns. They prefer moderate to strong lighting and water flow.

Other SPS
This gallery features less common SPS coral species that don't fit into the major genera categories. This includes corals like Turbinaria (scroll coral), Pavona, and other interesting SPS varieties. These corals can add diversity to a reef tank and often have unique growth forms and colors.

Pocillopora
Pocillopora is a genus of SPS coral known for its distinctive clustering growth pattern that resembles bird's nests. These corals are generally more resilient than many other SPS corals and can adapt to a wider range of aquarium conditions. They come in various colors including pink, brown, and green. Pocillopora prefers moderate to strong lighting and water flow.

Porites
Porites is a genus of SPS coral that forms massive, boulder-like colonies. These corals are known for their slow growth rate but can live for hundreds of years, with some colonies being among the oldest living organisms on Earth. In the aquarium, Porites corals are considered advanced due to their specific requirements. They prefer strong lighting and moderate water flow.

Psammocora
Psammocora is a genus of small-polyped SPS coral that often forms encrusting or plating colonies. They have intricate skeletal patterns and come in various colors including green, brown, and purple. These corals are considered moderate in care and can be good choices for reefers looking to expand beyond LPS corals.

Seriatopora
Seriatopora, commonly known as bird's nest coral, is a genus of SPS coral with delicate, slender branches that form dense colonies resembling bird's nests. These corals are typically found in pink, purple, and orange colors. They are considered moderate to advanced in care requirements, needing good water quality, strong lighting, and moderate to strong water flow.

SPS Propagation
SPS (Stony Corals) are among the easiest of corals to propagate. This article covers the four main methods for mounting frags: wedging in rock crevices, using CrazyGlue Gel, marine epoxy putty, and fishing line. Key tip: keep frags in strong water flow to blow off the slime that develops after propagation.
